 Dr. Najibullah was the President of Afghanistan from 1987 to 1992. He was a member of the People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA), a Marxist political party that came to power in Afghanistan through a coup in 1978. Najibullah was the head of Afghanistan’s intelligence agency, the KhAD, before becoming President. His Presidency was marked by continued civil war, economic hardship, and an ongoing conflict with mujahideen forces who were fighting to overthrow the communist government. In 1992, Najibullah was overthrown by mujahideen forces, and he sought refuge in the United Nations compound in Kabul. However, he was captured by the Taliban in 1996 and executed.
